A young woman in a summer dress enters and crosses Upstage, past the mime. Her head is down, hair hiding her face. The mime follows, mincing. The patrons chuckle approvingly.

She has almost reached Upstage Left exit when he startles her with a flourishing tip of his cap. The flinch in her shoulders makes the crowd roar, but suddenly he’s stopped. Something in her face we can’t make out. Our utensils clink. He clears his throat. She grasps his gloved hand.

4. Musical

Curtain. Two smiling, chubby friends in zoot suits come forward as if about to sing. Suddenly a scream from the audience, a shot, and a woman crying, “Charlie, what have you done?!” The actors seat themselves on the edge of the stage, still smiling, and watch as the audience erupts and rumbles like bay waters. From outside the theatre come sirens, on key.
